The world of data visualisation is changing. And changing fast.

While team Tableau have been blurring the boundaries between data and art, team Power BI have been pushing down prices and empowering less technical users.

However, without Tableau’s devotion to aesthetics, Power BI dashboards can end up looking…(how do we say this politely)…a bit shit!

Data Cubed to the rescue!

With a little know-how, you can let go of out-dated habits and give your Power BI visuals a modern feel.

Here are 6 tips to level-up your designs.

Tip #1 — Legends can look busy and dated! Try grouping categories and use tooltips for detail.

Layer charts for more spacious labelling.

Tip #2 — Tables needn’t look cramped. Be generous with row padding and shorten titles. Friendly formatting adds style and function.

Tip #3 — Default line charts can be messy when crowded. Add pages for more space and let your charts breathe! Be strategic with colour and ditch those gridlines.

Tip #4 — No one wants to guesstimate bar heights! Show values on bars and drop axes for a cleaner visual.

Tip #5 — Embrace a visual hierarchy. Your KPIs are the stars of the show. Detail plays a backing role! Colour code KPIs to highlight insights clearly.

Tip #6 — Visual cues make tables more engaging. Data bars and colour provide shortcuts to insight.

And there you have it! Increased engagement, shortcuts to insight and aesthetic appeal with just a few changes. We can’t wait to see what you create!
